PAGE ONE COMMENTARY: New Development in Neary Case

FORMER KWPD COP WINS VINDICATION
IN FEDERAL COURT
IN NEW JERSEY

by Dennis Reeves Cooper

If you’re a regular reader of this
newspaper, you know that we try to
give you regular updates on the Tom
Neary case. Tom Neary is the former
Key West cop who was suspended back
in October 2007 and subsequently fired
based on almost-ridiculous charges
trumped up by former Police Chief
Bill Mauldin— who had to resign in
disgrace last year after he “allegedly”
got caught sexually harassing Christie
Phillips, his pretty blond public information
officer.

Mauldin was afraid that Neary
was ready to go public with allegations
of corruption and incompetence
in his department, so he manufactured
charges like Neary was somehow misrepresenting
himself as a federal officer
and was carrying a stolen gun.

The gun charge had to be abruptly
abandoned after Mauldin realized that
his ace investigators had sent one of
the gun’s part numbers to the National
Crime Information Center, rather than
the serial number. Duh!

Mauldin called in the FBI to try
to investigate the “misrepresentation”
charge, but the G-men soon realized
that Mauldin had conned them and
they quickly dropped that investigation
and left town.

Elderly Man Says He Does Not Recall Changing Will to Leave Part of His Estate to His Former Nurse

THE NURSE, HER HUSBAND AND HER
MOTHER ALSO SHOW UP AS BENEFICIARIES
IN NEW WILL OF ALZHEIMER’S VICTIM

BUT LAWYER SAYS THAT DAUGHTER-IN-LAW
USED “UNDUE INFLUENCE” TO KEEP
INHERITANCE

NURSE: “I WAS JUST TRYING TO HELP AND
ADVOCATE FOR A FRIEND”

by Dennis Reeves Cooper

Eugene W. “Gene” Paxton is
88 years old. He retired in 1979 After
working for General Motors in Flint,
Michigan, for 30 years. He and his
wife Carol came to the Keys shortly
after that and bought a large piece of
ocean-front property on Cudjoe Key.
That was back when land was cheap
here. And they built a beautiful home
on that property.

Gene is not a rich man by rich
men’s standards, but he will leave a
substantial estate.

But recent years have not been
happy for Gene. Carol died in 2005. And
shortly after that, his son, Wayne, died
in a motorcycle accident. Until recently,
Gene’s simple will and testament left
his entire estate to his daughter-in-law,
Linda Paxton, the wife of his deceased
son. She lives in Tucson, Arizona, with
her family, but she has Gene’s power of
attorney and pays all his bills.

KEN DAVIS: Letter from Baghdad

by Ken Davis

EDITOR’S NOTE: Ken
Davis’ Letters From Baghdad
are published here periodically.
They are excerpts from
his book-in-progress “Road To
Baghdad. Davis is the former
head of the U.S. Drug Enforcement
Agency here in the Keys
and was a candidate for Sheriff
in last year ’s county elections.

“The Road to Baghdad”
chronicles the tales and stories
of the men and women in Iraq,
written as seen through Davis’
eyes. The story is based on solid
fact and truth and written with
a humorous license. The names
are changed to protect the guilty
and confuse the innocent.

DAY ONE

I got to the Marriott
Courtyard in beautiful downtown
Colombus, Georgia, at
11:30 at night. My late arrival
was due to missing my connection
in Miami because the
plane from Key West took off an
hour late. In one of the rare coincidences
of air travel history,
my bag made the connection
and I didn’t. It was waiting for
me when I got off the plane in
Atlanta, where I was quickly
reminded that winter still exists
in parts of the country. I was
wearing tan chinos, a white
linen shirt and deck shoes
without socks. Guess who felt
and looked stupid.

I grabbed my jacket from
the suitcase and proceeded to
find the shuttle van to Colombus.
The one-and-a-half hour
ride varied from freezing to
heat stroke according to which
rider yelled the loudest at the
driver.

Sunshine Special at Animal Shelter

Like the sun, great things come in orange packages. These
particular orange packages, ten in all, are furry and soft, love
to smooch, and purr a lot. Whether you call them orange, or
marmalade, or ginger, ask any aficionado and they’ll tell you
orangies are extra special: smarter, friendlier, more loving. An
internet search for “orange cats” gives over 14 million results!

Contrary to popular opinion, orange cats are not always
male. Kitty, Hope, Jemima and LuLu, residents at the shelter, are
testament to that. Leo, Goldie, Baby, Peach, Rustie and Cashmere
make up this group of ten furry balls of orange sunshine. Each
one is ready for a loving home and is up to date with shots, has
been spayed or neutered and microchipped. The adoption fee
is $20.

The shelter is located at 5230 College Road on Stock Island
and is open Monday through Friday, 10-6 pm, Saturday from
10-2 pm. 294-4857.

Wrecker’s Cup Race Series Ends Sunday

The last of this year’s Wrecker’s Cup races is this Sunday,
April 26, with a start time of 1pm. This all-in-fun race recalls
the tradition of the “wreckers” in Key West of the 1800s. Vessels
laden with rich cargoes from Gulf and Carbbean ports often
became victims of storms and unmarked reefs off Key West. The
first wreckers to reach the site had the responsibility to save the
passengers and crew— but they also won the right to salvage
the cargoes.

In the Wreckers Cup series, boats race to the Sand Key
light. then, of course, there’s a party at the Schooner Wharf Bar
to view the race on video. Boats race in five classes with awards
in each class. The captain’s meeting is tomorrow evening, Saturday,
April 25, at 7pm, on the upper deck at the Schooner Wharf.
Info: 393-3302 or http://www.SchoonerWharf.com.
