$800 Necklace Reported Stolen at Charity Event

KWTN Team Report

A silver necklace valued at $800 was reported stolen
following the Spring Fair benefit event for the Florida Keys
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals (SPCA)
last Friday night.

The necklace had been donated by Ms. Georgia
Favelli to be auctioned off during the party,” said Connie
Christian, SPCA president. “After the auction, we noticed
that the necklace was missing.” None of the other auction
items were reported missing, Christian said.

A report was filed with the Key West Police Department.
“It is very distressing that someone would steal something
that was intended to raise money to benefit the less
fortunate animals in our community,” Christian said.
The good news is that the Spring Fair event raised
more than $50,000 for the SPCA’s fund to build a new hurricane-
proof animal shelter, which is expected to cost $3.5
million. Approximately $300,000 has been raised so far.

Kimberley Denney: The Pig Story: Still Lots of Questions

Kimberley denney by
Kimberley Denney

Bobby Adisano is in quite
a quandary. Okay, I’ll say it: he’s
a pig in a poke.

When I first read that he
was arrested and accused of
dragging Harriet, his pet pig, on
her back and over broken glass
down Duval Street, I fantasized
about harnessing his testicles to
a leash and dragging him along
that same cruel journey down
the street. (No, not a sexual fantasy,
you perv. This was about
revenge.)

Then it got worse: the pig
was dead just after sunrise, and
an Animal Control officer said
he went to Adisano’s Angela
Street house and found a second
injured pig living in deplorable
conditions, in a small cage
barely bigger than the animal,
with nothing but rotting fish as
a food source.

At that point, I thought
that testicle harnessing would
be too good for Adisano! My
thoughts were now running
along the lines of staking him
out, slathered in honey and resting
on a bed of fire ants.

KEN DAVIS: Letter from Baghdad

Ken davis EDITOR’S NOTE: Letters
From Baghdad will be published
here periodically. They
are excerpts from “The Road to
Baghdad,” a book-in-progress,
being written by Ken Davis,
former head of the U.S. Drug
Enforcement Agency here in
the Keys and a candidate for
Sheriff in last year’s county elections.

“The Road to Baghdad” by Ken Davis
chronicles the tales and stories
of the men and women in Iraq,
written as seen through Davis’
eyes. The story is based on solid
fact and truth, and written with
a humorous license. The names
are changed to protect the guilty
and confuse the innocent.

I sat at my computer and
hesitated, not sure if I should
push the send button. Was I
going too far, professionally
and geographically? Iraq was
half a world away and while
I had spent the better part of
my life fighting the drug war,
Baghdad was a totally different
type of war zone.

It seems as if summer arrived overnight, but the reopening
of the community pool at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community
Center means there’s an easy way to escape the heat. The pool,
which reopened on March 23, offers open swimming from 10
a.m. until 5:30 p.m. seven days a week The pool was temporarily
closed while a new filtration system was installed. In addition,
the surrounding deck and inner surface of the pool have been
completely restored.

Bahama Village Arch

The welcoming arch that stands as the gateway to Bahama
Village is about the get a facelift— at the hands of Key West
High School students. The Petronia Street arch was temporarily
removed Tuesday morning. Key West Public Works crews will be
delivering it to the Key West High School art department where
it will be completely revamped. In the meantime, the stucco piers
that support the arch will be repaired and repainted as well. City
officials hope to have the familiar landmark reinstalled as quickly
as possible, though no firm timeframe has been set as yet.
