Sheriff’s Spokeswoman Caught

in Fib Trying to
Defend Capt. Peryam

CONCERNING THE ALLEGATIONS
THAT PERYAM HAD AFFAIR WITH
YOUNG GIRL AND ORDERED
DEPUTIES TO HARASS THE GIRL’S
FAMILY, HERRIN SAYS HE WAS
CLEARED BY INVESTIGATION.
THAT IS NOT TRUE

PHOTOS: CAPT. BOB PERYAM, 54, with his former girlfriend, Courtney
Kelley. According to Courtney’s mother, she was 21 when she
and Peryam were dating. Peryam, who is a candidate for Sheriff,
is married with children. His wife, Lt. Cindy Peryam, runs the
Sheriff’s Internal Affairs bureau.
If you have been paying
any attention at all, you know
about the allegations that an
anguished Big Pine Key mother
has made concerning candidate
for Sheriff Capt. Bob Peryam—
that he had a tawdry sexual
affair with her young daughter
and then, at the request of the
young woman, ordered deputies
to harass the family.

In a letter to the editor of
the Key West Citizen a couple
of weeks ago, Becky Herrin,
the official spokeswoman for
the Monroe County Sheriff’s
Office (MCSO) attempted to try
to defend Peryam by claiming
that he had been cleared of those
allegations “by investigation.”
That is simply not true— and
she knew it wasn’t true when
she said it.

In an effort to get a clarification
from Herrin, I sent her
the an e-mail early this week.
At presstime, she had not
responded. Here is an edited
version of that email:

Dear Becky:

I saw your letter in the
Citizen a week or so ago and
I am wondering, since you
are an official spokesperson
for the MCSO, was that an official
statement representing the department, or was that
just your opinion?
