Payroll Fraud at Keys Energy:

Two Employees
Fired, One Suspended

ACTION CAME AFTER FOUR-MONTH
REVIEW OF SECURITY TAPES,
PAYROLL RECORDS AND E-MAIL
AND INTERNET USAGE IN
PURCHASING SECTION

KWTN Team Report

Two Keys Energy employees
have been fired and
another disciplined following
a four-month investigation into
allegations of payroll fraud,
improper use of the company’s
e-mail and Internet system and
violation of other policies.

Purchasing Supervisor
Letisia Powell and Contract
Coordinator Desiree Fernandez
were terminated, effective
August 7. Eva Pope, a buyer in
the company’s Purchasing Section,
was suspended for 10 days
without pay and placed on
probation for nine months.

The investigation, which
included an intensive review
of employee time sheets, security
camera tapes and e-mail
and Internet usage, found that
Powell and Fernandez routinely
manipulated the payroll
tracking system to, on multiple
occasions, get paid for time not
worked.

the Green Parrot

For many, bingo still conjures
up images of blue-haired
seniors huddled ‘round rickety
card tables in a drafty church
basement or an Elk’s Club on
a Tuesday afternoon.

If that’s you, think again,
because this and every Monday
for the next few months, the
Green Parrot will present, as a
benefit for the M.A.R.C. House, their very own version of this iconic game of chance.

The CRB Is Coming of Age

CITIZEN REVIEW BOARD ALERTS
POLICE MANAGEMENT TO WHAT
APPEARS TO BE SYSTEMATIC
ABUSE OF ICOP— THE IN-CAR
VIDEO CAMERA POLICY

by Dennis Reeves Cooper

The Key West Citizen
Review Board (CRB) has been
much in the news lately.

Two weeks ago, we ran
a story about candidates for
Sheriff debating whether or not
a county-wide CRB is needed
to oversee the Monroe County
Sheriff’s Office. The Key West
CRB only oversees the Key West
Police Department (KWPD).

Last week, Key West Interim
Police Chief Donie Lee
agreed to consider beefing up
departmental policy concerning
officers’ use— or non-use— of
ICOP, the onboard video system
that has been installed in
most Key West police cars. That
agreement came after the CRB
pointed out that, apparently,
officers were deactivating the
system at will. The cameras are
supposed to automatically turn
on when officers activate their flashing blue lights.

Also last week, the CRB
concluded that Officer Luis
Sanchez used “unnecessary and
excessive force” when he pulled
local artist Sal Unuvar, 47, out of
his car and smashed his face into
the pavement during a traffic
stop in June of last year.

Infant Stabbed in Miami

Rhonda
by Rhonda
Linseman-Saunders

Nobody wants to be
perceived as that crazy, overprotective
parent who panics
and rushes their children to the
doctor every time they cough.

You know— that parent who
causes the receptionist to sigh
and roll her eyes when they call
to make the eleventh appointment
that month. But I was
recently reminded that when a
child’s health is at stake, it’s no
time to practice humility. I also
learned that a pediatrician with
a proactive attitude about treating
children is invaluable.

My infant son began projectile
vomiting at around two
and a half weeks of age. Over
the next several weeks, the
vomiting increased in volume
and he began refusing to eat
more than an ounce or two.
His weight gain dropped off
and he fell from near the top
of the weight-for-age chart to
near the bottom. He looked
like a drowned rat—a perfectly
adorable drowned rat, but a
drowned rat nonetheless. I’d
never had a baby with only
one chin and no thigh rolls so
I got scared and took him to
see Dr. Sack, our pediatrician
in Key West.

Mosquito Alert

Numbers of mosquitoes have increased this summer due
to many factors including rain, tides, clogged drains, gutters and
abandoned swimming pools. A sweep of Key West is scheduled
to begin Monday, August 11-15th. Inspectors will inspect every
part of Key West to identify existing and potential breeding sites
for mosquitoes.

A single female mosquito can lay 250 eggs that will become
adults 5 days later. Often, it can take months after a homeowner
leaves a house due to a foreclosure before a caretaker arrives and
drains a pool. If you are aware of a mosquito problem in your
neighborhood, especially an abandoned swimming pool or a
problem storm drain, please call Mosquito Control at (305) 292-
7190.

OPINION

What Does Bob Peryam
Have in Common with
John Edwards?

by Dennis Reeves Cooper

Former presidential candidate John Edwards’
recent confession of infidelity is all over the news
these days. What is interesting to us about this story
is that it broke months ago in one of the national
tabloids, but the mainstream media refused to touch
it. Occasionally, when one of the big news outlets
would ask Edwards about it, he would put on that
wide-eyed innocent look and just lie.

Sort of reminds us of Capt. Bob Peryam, one of
the candidates for Sheriff. We have reported to you
several times in recent months that he had an affair
with a young woman a couple of years ago and, at her
request, may have ordered his deputies to harass her
father and brother. Those allegations are documented
in a seven-page report, handwritten by the woman’s
mother, as well as an investigative report provided
to us by the Sheriff’s Office.

ON THE SONNY SIDE

Sonny_mccoy
Who Are the Real Players?

by Charles “Sonny” McCoy

Shakespeare wrote “ Life’s but a walking shadow;
a poor player, that struts and frets his hour upon
the stage, and then is heard no more; it is a tale told
by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing”.

Shakespeare did strut and fret his hour upon
the stage; but he has been heard billions of times and
continues to be heard. Many of us have played our
parts on this stage and there are so many more that
influenced our lives, but we can’t remember their
names.

I’m often amused by the pseudo-purist that
enjoys all the amenities that have been provided for
this person and takes for granted his inalienable right
to enjoy. But deprive that person of his dueness, and
you feel the fury of a person who accuses the system
of being biased or something even worse.
